Abiding Love / Good Friday Poem/1

The sun shines equally
On those who are mourning
And those who rejoice.
The birds sing their songs
For the passerby who walks
Heavy with burden
Or light in freedom.
The tree offers equal shade
To the one who is depressed
And the one who is full of life.
Nature is indifferent
To our human emotions.
Nature is indifferent
To our joys and sorrows.
Is God indifferent too?

Or perhaps it is not indifference,
But abiding love and presence –
Always there
In equal share
Whether we want it
Or not,
Whether we seek it
Or not.
Just there.
Given freely
And equally
To all.

Perhaps I don’t have to
Weep
Or rejoice
To let you know
I’m here.
Perhaps like the sun, birds, and trees
I can just be me
Here for you
As I am
As you are
Abiding in love
Together.
